Areas of Specialization/Focus:

Adult, adolescent, individual, family, couples. Treatments for depression, anxiety, anger issues, substance abuse, pain management, grief, and trauma. Techniques frequently used include cognitive-behavioral, psychodynamic and insight-oriented therapy, interpersonal approaches, and biofeedback, as seen appropriate for the individual and presenting problem.

Personal Statement:

Dr. J. Travis Colwell completed his undergraduate work at Davidson College in 1987 and obtained his Masters and Doctorate at UNC Greensboro in 1998. While in graduate school Dr. Colwell pursued various research and clinical interests, working with emotionally disturbed and aggressive youth; individuals experiencing various pain and health issues; and incarcerated adolescents and adults. After completing an internship at the VA Medical Center in North Chicago, in the areas of substance abuse, PTSD, and neuropsychological assessment, Dr. Colwell later gained valuable experience working in correctional and youth development institutions, as well as the psychiatric facility, John Umstead Hospital in Butner, NC. Since 2001 Dr. Colwell has also maintained a part-time private practice in Chapel Hill, NC, as well as served as Assistant Clinical Professor at UNC Chapel Hill, teaching undergraduate psychology classes. In addition, he has also taught various undergraduate courses at Bennett College, A&T University, and currently at UNC Wilmington. Thus, Dr. Colwell has always shown an interest in working with diverse populations and issues, in hopes of assisting individuals in finding their own strengths and supports to effectively cope with life changing situations. With this in mind he maintains active involvement and participation with numerous groups and organizations, such as the American Psychological Association; the North Carolina Psychological Association as a Diversity Committee Member; and also with the American Pain Society.

Dr. Colwell moved to Wilmington, NC in 2006 where he is now a licensed clinical psychologist associated with Independence Back at Coastal Rehab Medicine. There he provides psychological treatment and assessment services including pain management, as well as working with physical rehabilitation patients at New Hanover Regional Medical Center.
