Personal Statement:

Kim Bolen McGrew, MA, LPA, LCAS-A is a clinical psychologist licensed as a Psychological Associate by the North Carolina Psychology Board and a Clinical Addiction Specialist-Associate by the North Carolina Substance Abuse Professional Practice Board.  She is also certified as a Health Services Provider. Kim received her master's degree in clinical psychology from the University of North Carolina at Wilmington, with an emphasis on substance abuse treatment. She has experience working with children, adolescents, adults, and families in outpatient mental health settings and community outreach programs. Kim is committed to providing a non-judgmental and trusting atmosphere to facilitate therapeutic growth. She believes that therapy is a collaborative process in which the therapist and client work together to achieve desired outcomes. Her therapeutic approach encourages individuals to enhance their self-awareness and confidence, utilize effective coping skills, and increase their motivation to reach personal goals. 

 

Kim treats a variety of emotional and behavioral concerns, including depression, anxiety disorders (e.g., generalized, social anxiety, OCD, phobias, panic disorder), post-traumatic stress, bipolar disorder, personality disorders, substance abuse/dependence, anger management, social skills deficits, academic difficulties, marital conflict, and military-related issues. Other areas of interest are stress management and helping people achieve a balance between physical, emotional, and social well-being. She is passionate about helping people communicate more effectively and improve their interpersonal and romantic relationships. Kim is also dedicated to helping individuals reach decisions and develop adaptive coping strategies during various life transitions, including beginning college, determining their career path, marriage, starting a family, grieving the loss of a relationship, retirement, and managing health conditions.  

 

Her treatment approach includes the use of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), which helps individuals develop effective thinking and behavior patterns, as well as adaptive coping and problem-solving skills. Kim has specialized training in Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), which supports values clarification and accomplishment of goals despite difficult circumstances and obstacles. Acceptance techniques help people discover deeper meaning and a sense of purpose to enhance their quality of life. She also utilizes Motivational Interviewing techniques, which help individuals develop the willingness to make desired changes and achieve self-actualization. Other specialized treatment includes interventions from the Gottman Method, which provides research-based methods for strengthening relationships and marriages and teaches practical communication and conflict resolution strategies.
