Personal Statement:

Dr. Eileen Schanel Klitsch received her Ph.D. in psychology from Temple University in Philadelphia in 1982. She did post-doctoral research at the Pennsylvania College of Optometry where she was a tenured faculty member for over 20 years and still serves as adjunct faculty. She became licensed as a child psychologist in Pennsylvania, and maintained a private practice there for over 15 years.

Dr. Klitsch came to Brunswick County in 2005 and joined Oak Island Pediatrics as their on-site child psychologist. In October of 2013, Dr. Klitsch opened her own practice to better serve all the children of Brunswick County. In her practice, she helps young children, adolescents, and their families achieve more stable and fulfilling lives. She does this by doing therapy with the children and/or their families, and also through doing assessments of the children that can provide more accurate diagnoses and treatment plans for their difficulties. She works extensively with children with attention problems and the behavior problems that are sometimes associated with them. Dr. Klitsch also has a great deal of experience with the emotional difficulties children and adolescents sometimes face, including depression, anxiety, and anger issues. Dr. Klitsch has always found that it is critical to take a team approach when working with children and coordinates her therapy with what parents are doing at home and teachers are doing in school.

Dr. Klitsch is also a trained mediator and worked for many years as a child custody mediator at a private mediation firm in Bucks County, PA. Through this experience she has gained great insight into working with families navigating the troubled waters of divorce and has helped many children through these difficult times. She still serves on the Board of Directors of the firm with which she was associated and provides them consultation as necessary.

Dr. Klitsch also has a unique specialty area in working with children with vision impairments. She has taught psychology courses at Salus University in their College of Education and Rehabilitation for over 25 years and has learned much about the special needs of children with vision impairment during this time. In her practice, she has done assessments of children with vision impairment to better help them in school placements.

Dr. Klitsch is also involved in her community and serves on the Advisory Board of the Oak Island Community Center which provides services for residents of Oak Island from infancy through old age. She also helps “parent” sea turtle nests each summer, and volunteers at various activities for the youth in her community.
